Our Wine Production
While we live in Bend, Oregon, and conduct our blending program here, we produce our wine at a facility in Medford, Oregon, in the heart of the Rogue Valley for our Southern Oregon wines, and we use a facility in Healdsburg for our northern California wines. This was a deliberate decision to protect the quality of the grapes - the grapes get from the vineyards to the facility in about 5 minutes. Grapes, much like our 3 year old son, are sensitive to travel.
We are researching locations for a bonded winery facility in Bend. It will be used to produce our second label wines, Magna (value table wines), and Magmita Sangria. We hope to have the facility open within the next year or so.
Current Volcano Vineyards Releases
Volcano Vineyards Syrah - Lakeside Vineyard, Rogue Valley 2005
- SILVER MEDAL at the 2007 World of Wine Competition
Our 2005 Syrah has a distinct raspberry and blueberry on the nose, bold fruit throughout and is starting to show the classic syrah white pepper on the finish. The wine was aged for 16 months exclusively in oak barrels from a variety of French coopers. These grapes are a Hermitage clone, believed to have come from Joseph Phelps in Napa. Drink now through 2010. The Syrah's fruitiness is enhanced by salty and bitter foods - olives, lemon, eggplant, greens . It also works well with pulled pork. 194 cases produced.
Volcano Vineyards Merlot / Cabernet Franc - Rogue Valley 2005
Merlot thrives in Aguila Vineyard, thanks to the elevation (approximately 1600 feet) which keeps things cooler, with even temperatures throughout the day. With more heat days during the 2005 growing season, this Merlot is bolder, and will age well over the next five years or so. We blended in some Cabernet Franc, which has added dimensions most noticeably to the nose – currant, violets and plum. Food friendly by design, it is lower in alcohol than the current fashion allowing the fruit to be the star. 290 cases produced.
Volcano Vineyards Rogue Valley Red Blend - Rogue Valley 2004
This wine is a blend of syrah, merlot and viognier (the three varietals we currently produce). Rich, elegant and lush, the wine shows raspberry, spice and cocoa on the nose, and dark fruit throughout. It can stand on its own as a glass pour, or it pairs perfectly with steak, bacon or cream-based pasta sauces. 200 cases produced.
Volcano Vineyards 2005 Viognier - Mendocino
Our first white, and our first wine from California grapes (our Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma Cab Sauv will be released late fall 2008). Classic viognier honey and floral nose, well balanced, pears and peaches throughout. A perfect summer wine - try it with a blue cheese salad. 115 cases produced.
